A Home Full of Gifted Persons
By Janice Hanes

"Each person is special in God's eyes and brings unique gifts to our community."

God has created each of us in a unique and wondrous way. Everyday, if you take the time to look, you can see God’s handiwork in the lives of those who call Paxton Ministries home. Each person is special in God’s eyes and brings unique gifts to our community.

For the past nine years, I have had the privilege of being touched by the gifts of one of these persons. From this special lady I often receive cards or little notes of encouragement telling me how much she cares for me and God loves me. She often tells me that she prays for all the staff here at Paxton Street Home, naming them one by one. This special lady is Betty Saurman.

Betty is one of our senior ladies living at Paxton Street Home. She has lived in the central Pennsylvania area since the age of 4. As a young woman Betty attended Pine Street Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg. It was at that church that she came to know Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. As a young woman it was her desire to study the Bible and become a Christian social worker. Sometime in the late 1950’s she was able to attend Barrington Christian College in Rhode Island. She majored in bible and social work.

Throughout her adult life, Betty has suffered with major depression and spent some time at the Harrisburg State Hospital. She states that, "Nothing can separate me from my Lord, even thought I feel sometimes that I should work harder for His kingdom. I love Him so."

In 1991, Betty came to live at Paxton Street Home. Since moving here Betty has blessed us all with her love and compassion. Betty exhibits her Christian faith by serving in a variety of areas. She is always willing to help out, is always pleasant and will read scripture to anyone who asks. On many occasions she has assisted with a worship service or devotional time at the Home.

When I need prayer, it is a privilege to go to Betty and ask her to pray for me or with me. I appreciate Betty for her honesty and the encouragement that she gives to everyone here at Paxton Street Home.
