The Founding of In 1981, God gave a vision to a group of Christians who were concerned about the lack of quality housing for disadvantaged adults in Harrisburg, PA. The former Messiah Home on Paxton Street was sitting empty. In faith this group, led by Glenn and Beth Frey, Dr. John Kreider and Pastor Woody Dalton of the Harrisburg Brethren In Christ Church, privately incorporated and offered to buy the property with a $100,000 down payment within three months. It was a bold step of faith, because they had no money. But they knew that if it truly was God’s vision, He would provide. And He did. Original Board Chairperson Woody Dalton recalls the meeting that was called one week before the deadline date for the $100,000 downpayment. At that meeting, Woody was prepared to thank everyone for their help, but declare that the goal couldn't be met. Of the little money that had come in so far, most had been spent on building security and repairs. However, at that meeting two anonymous gifts were received totalling $125,000. The founders knew that they had witnessed a miracle and that this truly was God's ministry. There was much rejoicing on that special day. And Paxton Street Home was born. Area Christians helped clean, paint, repair and furnish the building and our first residents moved in in November of 1981. The fact that Paxton Street Home exists today is truly a testimony of faith, hard work and perseverance. Many Christians in the Central Pennsylvania area volunteered hundreds of hours and donated food, furnishings and money to see the facility open. During the first few years the Home was staffed entirely by volunteers. In 1985 the final $100,000 payment was made on the building and Paxton Street Home was debt free. Over the years, we’ve expanded our vision to enable us to minister to our residents’ specific skill levels and needs, and to help more individuals. In 1991, we adopted the name Paxton Ministries, to allow for expansion to other facilities. However, Paxton Street Home is still the name of our Paxton Street building. |
