Who Are Our Residents? We are often asked this question, and frankly it is not the simplest question for us to answer. That’s because there is no single category into which our residents fit. We've always purposed to be a home where a wide variety of individuals in need could find a loving place to call home. Therefore our residents are a special group of people, as diverse and beautiful as a bouquet of flowers. Our residents are persons for whom living in a community with support and accountability is necessary (or for some just preferable to living on their own) due to age, disability and/or lack of income. From the day Paxton Street Home first opened, God has given us a vision to help the poor. Therefore, most of our residents are on limited incomes. In fact, only 15% of our residents can pay the full cost to live here. The rest pay what they can. We charge rent on a sliding scale, based on each individual's resources, and accept residents regardless of their ability to pay. We make up the difference in our budget through donations, grants and funding from the local county government. The majority of our residents are diagnosed with having some form of a mental illness. The primary forms of mental illness are schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression. Another number of residents deal with mental retardation. And some of the individuals that we serve are dually diagnosed, which means they deal with both mental illness and mental retardation. However, not all residents fit in the above categories. For example, some of our residents are recovering alcoholics; some are physically disabled. Our residents currently range in age from 20's to early 80's, although we accept individuals over 18 years old. Some have active and involved families, but many do not. Many residents hold jobs in the community, or volunteer. Besides our largest home, Paxton Street Home which is home to 85 residents and approximately 30 staff, we also operate the Hudson Street Apartments. This small apartment building is within walking distance of Paxton Street Home and offers more independent living for 5 residents. Like a bouquet, God has brought a beautiful assortment of people to live at Paxton Ministries. We thank God for his peace, which rests on our ministry. We depend on his presence daily as so many people of varying needs and abilities are living together in community. |
